SPOTLIGHT - FEATURING . . . KENYA

Owned by Susan Johnson an ESAA member since 1982 and the tabulator for the VES program (Versatile English Setter). Sue who is also a member of the Bluebonnet English Setter Club has been showing English Setters since 1982. Kenya is bred by CCESC's Kristen Apodaca and BJ Parsons, DVM [GCHG Weymouth’s En Fuego out of CH Festivity BJ’s Frozen Margarita JH]

From Sue Johnson, enjoy the read!:

Kenya was born in April, 2019 and we hit the ground running but then everything came to a halt with COVID in 2020.  We picked right back up again, training and competing in conformation, obedience, Rally, dock diving, FAST CAT, Fetch, Trick Dog and the Canine Good Citizen program.  Kenya is my fourth English Setter to pursue multiple sports.

Kenya loves to train.  Not a day goes by that she isn’t asking to do something, anything, that involves what she knows or what she is learning.  She is very quick to learn and will readily keep trying until she gets it right.  We spend most of our time in agility and in December 2024, we went to her first AKC Agility Invitational as the #2 English Setter.  She far exceeded my dreams when she had one fault in five runs over three days.  The environment at the Invitational is nothing like local trials or anywhere she has ever been but she handled it all beautifully and brought home the breed medallion.

You might think with all her accomplishments that she might be a bit much to live with but she is a joy every day.  She hunts her squirrels in the backyard but is happy to settle down when she is inside.  She loves almost any fresh vegetable I share with her.  She is a wiggler when she sees someone she has decided is her best friend.  While not a barker, she is a talker and I think her next skill might be yodeling!

A huge thank you to Kristen and BJ for allowing Kenya to come to Texas!

FOOTNOTE: As webmaster for CCESC, I enjoy highlighting the accomplishments of our setters and their owners. Since English Setter owners are a shy bunch, most of my material comes from diligent following of Facebook pages for our club and our members. Recently, I was intrigued by a shared post on our President's Page, highlighting KENYA above. I asked Kristen if she could help me get in touch with the owner so that I might inquire about doing a story on this beautiful creature. All I needed to know was that Sue lives in Texas and is involved in the ESAA VES program. I was able to get her contact information from the ESAA website and asked her if she would let us profile Kenya. Thankfully, Sue responded almost immediately to my request and provided the biography above, along with the pictures you see here. Many thanks to Sue for sharing hers and Kenya's story - CONGRATULATIONS to this winning Team and of course to our own Kristen and BJ, Kenya's breeders.
